HOW TO PLAY SLIDE GUITAR:

line

If you have never attempted slide guitar until now, this lesson will help to get you started down the right path. Let's begin with an overview of a few important initial topics.

SLIDE TYPES:
The two most popular types are Glass and Metal slides. Each have their own unique poperties and for the minimal costs involved I would suggest purchasing one of each to find out which slide tone reflects your personal taste. The glass and metal slides do however share one common tonal charateristic. They offer better tone when their weight is greater. The heavier the slide; the better the contact with the string, the clearer the tone, the longer the sustain.

GUITAR SET-UP FOR PLAYING SLIDE:
This area is more important than many players realize since the guitar strings and action play a serious role with regard to tone and sustain. To get the most out of your slide sound, I would suggest heavy gauge strings with higher string height (action).

PREFERRED FINGERS FOR WEARING A SLIDE:
The two most popular fingers for wearing the slide are the ring and the pinky. Duane Allman, Billy Gibbons, Bonnie Raite,Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks all go with middle finger. However, there are also many players using their pinky and a few who use their index. Keep in mind, it is a personal choice. And, realize just as with many other guitar techniques, there are a lot of people who have developed styles around things their body won't let them do. For some people certain fingers simply make more sense than others.
